Large, rounded throat pouch is yellow-orange year-round. Breeding adult has tufts on both sides of head behind eyes. Tufts are white in Western birds but black in Eastern birds. First-year birds are brown on top & white underside. Their kinked neck in flight is very distinct. Range along coasts, inland lakes & rivers. They eat primarily on fish.
