Very large, tall bird, blue-grey colour; black stripe extends above eye; white foreneck is streaked with black. Nonbreeding adult lacks plums; bill is yellower. Juvenile has black crown, no plums. All-white morph found in Southern Florida formally considered a separate species, “Great White Heron”. “Wurdemann’s Heron” morph found chiefly in Florida Keys, has all white head. Range is common, spends a few winter months far north into breeding range. Diet consists of fish, crabs and crayfish. Their call is a mechanical, rappid, high-pitched clicking in a series of notes without fluctuating.
