Heavily buit, wings broader than most falcons. Adult has goldenrod eye ring & legs (bluish in juveniles). Tail broad & tapered; barred or unbarred; perched bird, tail extends far beyond wingtips, unlike most falcons. Plumage vary from white morph to grey morph, to a very dark & paler grey morph without goldenrod eyerings (shown). Juveniles are browner above. They inhabit open tundra near rocky out-crops & cliffs. Flies with slow, powerful wingbeats. Preys on birds. Range- uncommon; winters irregularly south in North America. Casual to central California, southern Great Plains & southern Greak Lakes & mid-Atlantic regions. Mostly lives in Alaska & northern most Canada.
